How You Can Protect Water Quality
Rain, rain, everywhere…Ever wonder where all that rain water goes after a storm? The water that doesn’t naturally soak into the ground flows into the storm drain system, which eventually flows into local creeks and lakes. This run-off or stormwater is untreated, so it’s up to us to do everything we can to help make sure that water isn’t polluted.
Here are a few simple things you can do to help:
Pick up litter, it will keep our city looking nice and also keeps the litter from ending up in the storm system.
Doggy poo is a factor in stormwater pollution, be sure to pick up after your pets daily.
Properly dispose of or recycle motor oil, antifreeze, paint, solvents and other toxic materials. For proper disposal information, call Metro Recycling Information at 503.234.3000.
Maintain you vehicle regularly, check for leaks and fix them promptly.
Don’t allow soaps and detergents from car washing to flow down the street or into catch basins.
When gardening, if you use chemicals, keep them to a minimum and never use them around streams and lakes.
Compost or mulch yard waste. Don’t leave it in the street or sweep it into storm drains or streams.
Cover piles of dirt or mulch being used in landscaping projects.
